Studying at a BTC Host Church

As BTC looks to make its courses and programs available more widely, we are now not working in partnership with ‘BTC Host Churches’. Both lay education courses and some foundation level Diploma courses are available part-time through off-site tutorials. These courses are also available on an interest only basis.

How Host Church courses work

  • The class meets weekly (or sometimes fortnightly) with the local course tutor for a face-to-face tutorial.
  • Students do pre-reading for the class from materials supplied.
  • Assignments – usually three per course, one major and two minor – are submitted either online (for formal students) or by email or hard copy (for non-formal students) by the due dates set. Non-formal students have the option of not doing the assignments but we recommend that they do not opt out of these as they are important part of the learning on the course.

People involved

  • The students
  • The tutor or tutors
  • The Host Church coordinator
  • The BTC registrar

Responsibilities

The students are responsible for doing the set reading and assignments on time and turning up to class (for formal students, more than three classes missed mean no credit for the course unless there are extenuating circumstances).

The tutor is responsible for teaching, answering queries about the content of the course, and marking (unless this is given to another teacher).

The Host Church coordinator is responsible for making sure that the practical things are dealt with – that the venue is working ok, that communications happen (including liaison with the registrar and tutor) and that generally things run smoothly.

The registrar is responsible for course enrolments and withdrawals and assignment extensions, and for tutor and student orientation. She will visit the Host Church several times a year to touch base and run orientation sessions.
