Andrew Burgess

Andrew Burgess is the new Dean of Bishopdale Theological College from February 2012.

He has been ordained for 15 years, and prior to his appointment as Dean was Vicar of All Saints, Nelson, also having previously served in churches in Blenheim (NZ) and Oxford (UK). Andrew holds a Doctorate in Systematic Theology from The University of Oxford (UK), and his research was published in 2004 as The Ascension in Karl Barth.

He also holds a BSc in Chemistry and three other degrees in theology.
Andrew is married to Rebecca and they have three children.

Sue Patterson
Sue returned to NZ in April 2010 to take up the newly created position of senior lecturer and registrar at Bishopdale after almost ten years in parish ministry in Ireland where she was Rector of two rural parish groups and Dean of Killala Cathedral.

She holds BA, BD (distinction) and PhD
degrees from the University of Otago and, prior to her time in Ireland, spent a year in Princeton as a post-doctoral research scholar and four years as lecturer in ethics and applied theology at Trinity College, Bristol. Sue and John have two adult daughters.

Graham O'Brien

Graham O’Brien joined the BTC staff team in 2010 as Lecturer and Ministry Education Coordinator after three years as the Vicar of the Picton Anglican Parish.


He has a Ph.D in Cellular and Molecular Biology (Canterbury University), 3 years post¬doctoral experience in molecular virology (Auckland University), and a Masters degree in Theology from Laidlaw College (BCNZ).

Graham is married to Lee- Ann and they have two children.

Stephen May  - Visiting Lecturer in Theology, Semester One 2012.


Stephen May took his PhD in Theology from Aberdeen and a BD at New College Edinburgh, with a focus on Systematic Theology.

He is an ordained Anglican priest with parish experience in the UK and has spent considerable time in the Anglican Church of Aotearoa, New Zealand.

Stephen taught theology at St John’s College for over a decade, and brings a strong history of engaged and dynamic theological education. Stephen’s research interests include the interface of theology and science, and  theological conversation with his own passion for science fiction. The latter has resulted in the publication of his book Stardust and Ashes.

Stephen has also published numerous articles. He is married to Marion and                              they have a son and  daughter.

Rebecca Burgess

Rebecca Burgess holds two degrees, a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Canterbury in Classical Greek and French and a Bachelor of Divinity (postgrad) from Laidlaw College, as well as a TESOL qualification.

Rebecca has been a full-time parish youth worker, and has taught English to Speakers of Other Languages in various schools in New Zealand and England.

She is married to Andrew, and they have three young children.

Richard Drury

In 2012 Richard intends to combines tutoring with study towards a PhD. His Bachelor of Divinity degree was obtained as an external student with London University whilst studying at Birmingham Bible Institute and completing its three year Diploma in 1984.

After teaching and working in the commercial sector, he trained for the Anglican ministry at Trinity College (Bristol UK) and obtained his Master of Arts in theological studies from Bristol University alongside an Advanced Diploma in Ministerial Training from Trinity College in the year 2000, his ordination year.  

                        Richard is married to Carol.

Liz Riley
Liz is married to Steven and they have three children.

For ten years they served with CMS in Tanzania, and have now lived for fourteen years in the Nelson area. Liz has degrees in science (Victoria University of Wellington) and theology (Australian College of Theology).

She has taught maths in secondary schools and worked with international students as a teacher aid.

Tony Andrews

During 2010 and early 2011 Tony was priest in charge of Christchurch Cathedral, Nelson.  
In 1990 Tony resigned from the Deputy Principalship of Middleton Grange School in Christchurch for full-time ordained ministry.  He served as Vicar of All Saints Nelson, Chaplain of St Matthews Addis Ababa, and Dean of All Saints Cathedral Cairo, before becoming General Secretary of the new Zealand Church Missionary Society 2004-2009. He holds an M.A. (Hons in English) from Canterbury, and L.Th. (Hons) through St John’s College, a Dip.Tchg with Distinction, and a Dip.Ed. from Massey. He is married to Helen and they have three children and 12 grandchildren.

Derek Eaton

Derek was Bishop of Nelson 1990 – 2006 and Assistant Bishop in the Diocese of Egypt with North Africa and the Horn of Africa, 2007 – 2009. Along with Alice, an experienced school teacher, having taught in New Zealand, Tunis and Cairo, they served for many years as mission partners with WEC and NZCMS in North Africa and Egypt.  Derek has been Dean of Cairo, Vicar of Tunis, Tunisia and Sumner/ Redcliffs, Christchurch and has been involved in Bible translation projects in the Middle East and North Africa.  In 1985 he was awarded the QSM for his work overseas.  He has an MA in New Testament studies and Cross Cultural Communication, a DipTh and TTCert (with distinction).  They have three adult children and five grandchildren.

Michael Hewat

Michael Hewat is vicar of the West Hamilton Anglican Parish where he has served as curate then vicar since 1994. In 1999 he did a 6 month stint at Holy Apostles, Leicester, UK.  Prior to training for ministry Michael studied English literature (BA) and then did an adult building apprenticeship.  His theological training was at St John’s College where he gained a B Theol from Auckland and a Theol M (in Old Testament) from the Melbourne College of Divinity.  He is married to Kimberley, a gifted youth pastor and youth ministry consultant to the Diocese of Waikato.  They have 4 adult children

Dale Williamson

Dale is presently a Co-Vicar of Holy Trinity Tauranga. Dale has completed three Otago degrees, a BA in 1976, a BD (with dist.) in 1992, and a PhD in 2008 on the relationship between the Charismatic Movement and the New Zealand Anglican Church.  Since being ordained in 1990 Dale has worked in parish ministry, spent time on studying for her PHD and served as Archdeacon of Wellington for nine years.

Paul Williamson

Co-vicar of Holy Trinity, Tauranga. 1979 BTheol (Otago), 1992 MPhil (Notts) – “Non-stipendiary Ministry in the New Zealand Anglican Church”. Ordained in 1980, Paul has mostly worked in parish ministry, with four years as the first Ministry Officer for the Diocese of Dunedin.

Paul was the leader of ARMNZ and subsequently New Wine NZ for a number of years, and currently chairs AFFIRM.

Richard Ellena

Richard grew up in a musical family and has a degree in music, majoring in composition.  He is a multi-instrumentalist having played in orchestras, musical theatres, bands and brass bands and composed for, conducted and sung in choirs.  Richard trained as a teacher and taught music in high schools for 10 years before training for the Anglican ministry at St John’s College in Auckland in 1983 where he obtained a Diploma in Theology.  Richard was ordained an Anglican priest in 1985 serving in Timaru from 1986 to 1991. In 1991, he moved to the Nelson Diocese, to ministry at the Church of the Nativity in Blenheim which grew from an average Sunday congregation of 150 to 500; making it one of the larger NZ Anglican Churches.    He was Vicar General from 2002 – 2006 and ordained as the Bishop of Nelson in February 2007.   He has pledged to continue to “hold high the flag of evangelical orthodoxy” during his term as the 10th Bishop of Nelson. Richard and his wife, Hilary, have two adult children and two grandchildren.

Mairion Goodman

Mairion has been in Nelson since August 2010.  Prior to that she was a curate in Bristol, UK for five years, having trained at Trinity college, Bristol. 

She has degrees in English Literature & French and Applied Theology.  Her dissertation was on Prayer and personality, and she is fascinated by the way we all approach God that fit with who we are. 

She is married to James and they have three children.

Debbie Smith

Since 1991 Debbie has worked in pastoral care, counselling and supervision. She has extensive experience of pastoral ministry in many different contexts. This has included tutoring and establishing pastoral teams in churches, dioceses and theological colleges in the UK. Prior to coming to New Zealand 4 years ago she re structured the 3 year Bishops’ Certificate in Pastoral Ministry Course for the Wakefield Diocese developing it to degree level and as an integral part of the School of Ministry that trained both lay and clergy for Anglican ministry.

With a background as a nursing sister and psychotherapist she currently works as chaplain to the Nelson Hospitals. She is married to Andrew who is also an                          ordained Anglican priest.

John Douglas

John is presently Associate Pastor at Bethlehem Baptist Church, Tauranga.  1988 Dip.Min (Te Nikau BTC), 1991 MA and Dip Tchg. (Denver Seminary), ordained in 1971 he has served in pastoral, ministry/theological education, and leadership and ecclesial governance roles in New Zealand, USA and UK.

Presently John is in the final stages of doctoral dissertation work (D.Min Denver Seminary) focussing on spiritual formation discipline practices of church leadership within New Zealand evangelical churches. 

Phillip Donnell
Phillip has Masters degrees in Geography and Applied Theology, a Diploma in Teaching and is
also qualified in ESOL and professional proof reading. He has been a secondary teacher, tertiary
teacher, Baptist pastor (4 churches), director of a tertiary study programme and a freelance writer. He currently lives in Tauranga with wife Katrina and works at Bethlehem College. He has three married children and five grandchildren.

Marge Tefft

Marge is an American who came to New Zealand in 2006 to serve as curate in Greymouth after training at Fuller Theological Seminary and earning and M.Div in 2004. 

She is now the vicar of the Greymouth & Kumara parish and is married to Robin Kingston.

Robin Kingston

Robin Kingston was Vicar of Greymouth Parish for 19 years, having previously been a High School science and maths teacher in Christchurch. He completed a two year course at Laidlaw College before completing an L.Th (1st class Hons).

He loves teaching the Bible and challenging folk to think deeply about their faith.

He is married to Marge Tefft and Chair of the BTC Foundation.

Graeme Howarth

Graeme has been a Christian for 30 years and works in the Telecommunications industry. He has been married to Susan for 23 years and they have three children and a grandson. Over the years he has been involved in diverse aspects of parish ministry: Children, Youth, Alpha, cell groups, drama& outreach, and church administration. Graeme graduated from the Christchurch branch of BCNZ with a BMin in 1998 and from Laidlaw College in Auckland with an MTH in 2010, both focussing on cross-cultural missions.
