ACADEMIC AND PASTORAL STUDENT SUPPORT

Academic support exists to help with things like:

  • Essay writing

  • Learning how to format and reference

  • Time management

  • Learning how to study more effectively

ONLINE GUIDES

Check out our Student How-To page, where you will find videos that show you how to access e-resources, reference, and use Zotero referencing software.

STUDY MENTORS

Bishopdale College uses a ‘study mentor’ approach as the foundation for student support.

Every formal student is assigned a member of staff as their first point of contact for academic support. For those who are in an internship programme, a study mentor is different to your internship mentor – they are there to support you with course learning and assessments. Your study mentor will also check in with you a couple of times a semester. If you need assistance with an assignment – either understanding the question, finding resources, or getting feedback on your work in progress, your study mentor is the first person to talk to.

  • Take the initiative to ask for help, as early as possible - ideally, 3-4 weeks ahead of an assessment due date. Be clear about what you need assistance with.

  • Come prepared with something – don’t show up to an academic support meeting having done nothing on an assignment. Come with some ideas, or with a draft piece of writing.

  • Make the most of your time by being on time and staying on topic.

For additional support, you will be referred to the College Director who will ensure you receive any assistance required.

ACADEMIC WORKSHOPS

During each semester we run workshops on study skills and essay writing. Dates will be provided by the Bishopdale team at the start of each semester.

PASTORAL SUPPORT

Studying can be hard at times! We encourage you to access your own support networks, including pastoral care that is in place at your Church, but you are also welcome to make a time to chat with your study mentor, or any of the faculty.

We encourage you to let us know if you are facing personal difficulties, including in your mental and physical health. The more we know, the better we are able to to support you.

Please find attached a flyer from the NZQA about Pastoral Care of Domestic Tertiary Students.
